Career Edge Internship: Global Talent Coordinator, Manulife

“Submitting my profile on Career Edge was the best decision I had taken when I was struggling with my job search in Canada. Despite holding a Masters degree along with a Global certification in my stream, it was extremely challenging to receive even a phone call from a recruiter.

The internship that I got through Career Edge was with Manulife, and it was not just a job but was a meaningful HR role where I was able to use my skills and grow them. This also provided me with networking opportunities within the organization that helped me build my network.

I recommend Career Edge program to every new immigrant I come across. Thank you Career Edge for being the biggest stepping stone of my career in Canada.”

Career Edge Internship: Recruitment Consultant, Rogers

“For a new immigrant like me, finding a job related to my field of study was always a task which not all are able to achieve easily. It was a difficult one for me as well as before I found Career Edge I had managed to find a contract job in a bank which had nothing to do with my experience or my area of education and was more like something to get my foot in the door.

Career Edge gave me an opportunity to showcase my talent and I was able to grab the first opportunity that came my way for an internship at Rogers Communications as a Recruitment Consultant and there has been no looking back ever since. I had a chance to visit ACCES Employment for a workshop and found out about Career Edge from one of the counsellors there and appeared for the video interview first thing after coming home.

After registration and looking for a job for another three months, I got a call from a Career Edge associate offering me an internship and a one liner I would tell everyone about my emotions when I got to know that I got it “I am on top of the world”.  As a person who was scheduled to start an eight-week bridging program with one of the organizations, I got a job on the same day of the start date for the program, I could not have asked for more. Career Edge was god sent for me.

The chance to get a first-hand feel of the Canadian corporate culture is the best part I liked about this internship. The fact that I performed well and was able to get my contract extended within three months of joining, much before the scheduled end date and with a pay increase which had not even been asked for was the highest point of my career. Apart from that, Rogers gave me a platform to not only do well in recruitment but also be a part of a lot of networking and open house events, adding value to my resume and skills.

The impact of this internship was not only felt professionally but also impacted my financial and personal life. I was able to stabilize my finances and also was able to plan things better in my personal life.

I would encourage more and more applicants to go for this internship and would also encourage organizations to partner with Career Edge as it is a win-win situation for all the parties involved. As a recruiter myself, I can vouch for the talent that we have managed to attract from such partnerships.”

OCTOBER

Career Edge Internship: Project Management Intern, Ontario Public Service
Now: I&IT Performance Measures and Reporting Specialist, Ontario Public Service

“Career Edge opened for me the door to Ontario Public Service.

I arrived to Canada in 2018, being completely sure that the job market would embrace me with my successful track record and advanced skills. But the reality appeared to be different, and I struggled in finding my first full-time job. I learned about Career Edge far before I came here, from my pre-arrival career coaches, but I postponed registration until I’ve heard a success story from a friend of mine, a recent immigrant who entered commercial banking through a paid internship.

When I saw an internship posting by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, I thought this job was designed for me. When I was invited for an interview, Career Edge consultants helped me prepare, so I had my mind set on victory. Fortunately, I was selected and joined the Ministry in June 2018 as a Project Management Intern in Business Improvement. I will never forget my emotions on the first day, when I entered the Ministry’s office with excitement and anticipation.

“Meaningful work that is never boring”, “environment that emphasizes learning”, “internal management consultancy” – these simple words cannot fully describe the amazing things we’ve done with my Ministry colleagues. Under their guidance, we juggled project management and LEAN methodologies, we held brainstorming and process modelling sessions to dive into the program areas’ business and to support them in finding new ways for improvement. During these intense months of my internship, I helped my team complete several successful projects.

I’ve learned a lot, I grew professionally, I discovered my potential and I’ve made new amazing work friends. My Career Edge mentors in concert with their Ontario Public Service (OPS) partners supported and advised me throughout my inspiring journey. Despite the hiring freeze in the government, closer to the end of the program, I’ve received three job offers from different Ministries and selected the contract with the Treasury Board Secretariat as my next career step.

I feel a lot of gratitude to my OPS managers, leads and peers as well as to all members of the Career Edge team for the unique opportunity to join the Ontario Public Service, to strengthen my professional network and to find a job I really love. I highly recommend Career Edge experience to all newcomers. It’s a great way for internationally trained professionals to start their career in Canada with top employers.”

SEPTEMBER

Career Edge: Customer Experience Agent, Slack

“When I first heard of Career Edge it was through my sister, who had also used the program. I had just moved across the country to Toronto from Vancouver and wasn’t sure where to begin in my professional job search, but I was eager to find something that was perfect for me.

I had stumbled upon a posting from Slack, which was a tech company that I was familiar with through some of my smaller courses in university. The second I saw the posting, I sent in my resume and worked with Career Edge to understand how I could make my application stand out.

To my surprise, the job at Slack wasn’t actually an internship but a full-time position. This proved even more valuable to me, as Career Edge really helped me break right into the right industry for me and it has allowed me to start building my career and life in a city I love. I was first hired a year ago, and the skills I’ve developed at Slack have led to my promotion within the company, and pushed me to continue to learn new things every day about how to be successful in this industry.

I thank my lucky stars that I stumbled upon this program when I did — it’s made all the difference in getting started, and it opened the door to what really was the perfect fit.”
