Celebrating Black History Month

By Events & Holidays

February 1st marks the start of Black History Month – a time where we celebrate and honour the achievements, stories, and legacy of Black Canadians. We are invited to learn about the contributions Black Canadians and their communities have made and continue to make within our society.

“Coming from a place where there are many ways in which African culture and festivals are celebrated, it is interesting to know that contributions made by people of African descent are recognized and celebrated in Canada as well.”

– Lola Pitan, Talent Specialist, Career Edge

New Year Resolutions

By Events & Holidays
For many of us, the New Year is a chance to not only reset and reflect on the year that passed, but also to set goals, create milestones, and plan for growth over the next 365 days. Considering the eventful, tumultuous, exhausting (and sometimes confusing) last couple of years, mental health, self-care, and work-life balance has shot-up the resolution lists for a lot of us. As for organizations and employers, taking care of their employees and ensuring a healthy and safe work environment will continue to be the priority for the year to come.

For Career Edge, welcoming the year of 2022 meant continuing our mission of creating meaningful, valuable, transforming, life-changing internship opportunities that empower individuals and launch careers that matter. As an organization, this is what we’re committing to for the year to come: Read More

National Internship Awareness Month

By Events & Holidays

Aspiring stars travelling for auditions, delivering their best performances to impress casting directors, with dreams of launching a successful career in their trained art – it’s not just Hollywood, it’s National Internship Awareness Month.

Like the preceding, annual Academy Awards, National Internship Awareness Month recognizes and celebrates the benefits of auditions, reaped by both its employers and jobseekers. For the second year, NIAM aims to dispel myths surrounding internships to shine light on how unknowns can become stars. And because many casting directors have misconceptions about hosting auditions, NIAM also attempts to generate buzz on how they, through offering temporary tryouts, can find the right talent to produce a Best Picture nomination. North American Inclusion Month

By Diversity and Inclusion, Events & Holidays

Abbreviated in length, but inspired by change, February is a time to do more, with less.

The National Jewish Council for Disabilities established North American Inclusion Month to recognize the need for more opportunities for people with disabilities. The initiative aims to do more than just improve our understanding of a person with a disability’s needs and aspirations for 28 days. It aspires to create action toward change, and to produce a more positive approach that prevails for 365. Read More

Remembrance Day

By CAF, Events & Holidays
A thin layer of black velvet, interlocked in another of red, held together by a two-inch, silver pin, creating a symbol of remembrance.

It’s worn on the left lapel, close to the heart, to remember, recognize, and honour those who lost their lives while serving our country. Read More

Mental Health Awareness Month

By Events & Holidays, Health and Safety in the work place
Feel like you’re suffering from a work/life imbalance? You’re not alone.

We’re in the middle of Mental Health Awareness Month, but it’s never too late to bring the issue of workplace stress to your attention.

The Canadian Mental Health Association reported that 58% of Canadians feel an “overload” resulting from “pressures associated with work, home and family, friends, physical health, volunteer and community service.” The organization defines stress as the ‘body’s response to a real or perceived threat.’  Read More

Two Decades of Breaking Down Barriers to Employment in Canada

By Events & Holidays

We are proud to be celebrating 20 years of helping candidates overcome barriers to employment and launch their careers through paid internships.

Founded in 1996, Career Edge was conceived by a group of private sector business leaders, gathered by the late civic visionary David Pecaut, who is well-known for the creation of Career Edge, CivicAction, and Luminato. Urban Joseph, former Vice-Chairman of the Toronto Dominion Bank, worked closely with Pecaut when designing Career Edge as a way to help young graduates successfully transition into the workforce, and improve the youth unemployment crisis of the mid-1990’s.

As Canada’s first online job posting board, Career Edge quickly gained endorsements from members of the federal government including Prime Minister Jean ChrétienPaul Martin, and Frank McKenna who would become Honorary Chair of Career Edge in 1998.

Jean Chrétien and Urban Joseph shake hands in 1997, symbolizing the partnership between Career Edge and the federal government.
